Trump Sings Sinatra Song

If the latest Opinion polls from New York State are anywhere near correct, Tuesday night will find Donald Trump singing those famous lines that Frank Sinatra sang back in the 1970’s. He’s going to wake up in the city that never sleeps and find that he’s A number One, King of the Heap.

The latest Quinnipiac poll gives The Donald 55%, Kasich 20% and Ted Cruz 19%. Other New York polls are all around the same percentages and one predicts that the 13% undecided will also break for Trump and that Trump will win every precinct. If these forecasts prove to be correct, Trump will take every one of the 90 delegates. New York may be a very impressive victory, and if other North Eastern States trend the same way, a lot of Conservatives are going to have to come to terms with Trump marching to the Ohio Convention as THE winning candidate.

The acerbic Mark Levin will be on life-support, along with the gang-of-four scribblers at the Wall Street Journal and a whole raft of ‘Conservative’ know-it-alls who live off TV appearances. Bret Stephens will surely move to Tel Aviv. Rush Limbaugh will be continuing his inquest on the New York Republican gathering where, he believes, Fox News sabotaged Cruz’s speech with a faulty PA system and the serving of dinner.

It seems likely that Fox did deliberately cut off Cruz’s mike before he had finished his speech. This is deplorable, but then so is the MSM treatment handed out to Trump day after day. As for the serving of dinner that distracted the black-tie gathering, that may have been accidental, as the affair was running late due to the security problems caused by the Soros-funded anti-Trump agitators. A cooked dinner waits for no man, though Rush, who probably has never cooked a meal in his whole life, would not understand this. In any event he was really steamed up (no pun intended) about the unfair treatment accorded his preferred candidate.

I doubt that the sabotage will have much effect on Cruz’s New York numbers on Tuesday. His goose may have been cooked (again no pun intended) a week earlier in Colorado, but in any case, his speeches are becoming forgettable, thanks to repetition and an unpleasant delivery. There is nothing wrong with the content of them but it is too narrowly focused and his passion sounds manufactured.

This week, Cruz is in Wyoming doing what he did in Colorado, which is to gather up crumbs in the belief that they will help make a whole cake. The ‘crumbs’ are local activists and small-time Republican dignitaries, who it seems, must be wined, dined and courted by the candidates in exchange for a commitment in Ohio. It is, as Rush keeps saying, the local process and quite legitimate. In the past this arcane and parochial system, rewarding Party stalwarts with their moment of importance, has not previously come under scrutiny because the State’s delegates have not mattered, since the winning candidate has already locked up sufficient votes.

The hope of the Republican elites, the WSJ Internationalist scribblers, Ted Cruz and Kasich is that this year, a Convention contest, going beyond a first ballot, will result in wheeling and dealing, wining and dining, and smoke-filled room deals.

To the wider electorate, these arrangements that deny a one-man-one-vote opportunity, are odious unless they happened to favor one’s own favorite. They clearly do not favor the Republican voters’ favorite, who is Donald Trump, and no amount of explaining by Limbaugh sweetens the unpleasant smell.

Cruz exhibiting his smartness and rule-book knowledge and thus gathering up delegates he did not win in the voting booths, only reinforces his image as a Washington professional insider and smart-alec lawyer. When he, his surrogates, his Talk-Show allies and the WSJ scribblers boast that this makes him smarter than Trump and therefore more qualified for the White House, they reveal no understanding of the mood of that part of the Republican grass roots and working Class independents who have had enough of professional, calculating politicians.

In comparing Trump to Cruz, Trump is undoubtedly larger than life and Cruz seems smaller than life. Grubbing around in Colorado and Wyoming for crumbs whilst Trump draws tens of thousands in New York, reinforces Cruz’s smallness.

There are rumors that Karl Rove, a longtime Bush adviser, money bundler and Republican insider, is preparing for a Trump victory and a rapprochement. Trump would do well to keep his distance from Rove and Co. but it suggests that Republicans of all stripes will ultimately get on board the Trump express after Ohio. When it comes to November, even some Democrat voters will find nose-holding insufficient to vote for either the crazed Trotskyite or the cold, calculating, greedy, lying wife of a lecher.

New York, New York was recorded in 1979 by the King of popular music, Frank Sinatra. The melody was composed by John Kander and the lyrics written by Fred Ebb for a film that featured Lisa Minnelli as the singer. But Sinatra, who was actually a New Jersey native, made the song his own and frequently sang it at concerts. The lyrics contain the line “If I can make it there, I can make it anywhere, its up to you New York, New York.” Seems like an appropriate song for The Donald Trump Tuesday!

  1. If, as expected, Trump wins big in the Northeast with Cruz coming in third in some instances, this will make it hard for Cruz to claim that only he can beat Hillary. Such a wide margin of victory in these Northern states will also shake the confidence of many of Cruz’s delegates. They, too, will understand that Cruz cannot possibly win in November unless he can carry states like Pennsylvania. Even if Trump falls a few delegates short in June, there is no way Cruz will be able to hold all of his delegates’ loyalty going into a brokered convention. I don’t think there will be enough suicidal GOP delegates willing to gratuitously put Hillary in the White House.
